My Makeup Blog: a Year in Numbers

Hi everybody,

Today is the last day of 2009 and in some hours, we are not only plunging into the next year but also the next decade. How exciting is that? The year 2009 has been wonderful to me, especially since the second half of the year. Not only this blog has picked up new audience and interests from companies, my life has also changed. The moment I am writing this entry, I am no longer a student (at least for a short while.) Finally, I graduated. My Makeup Blog was born because of my passion to makeup, that part we all know. However, there is another part most people don't know about it: it was born when its creator (that's me) was in the abyss of difficulties. At the time I created this blog, I went through hell and back. To say I was between a rock and a hard place was an understatement. There were so many difficulties and uncertainties played in my life at that time that I just wanted to pack my bags and left.

However, there's a little voice inside my head that told me if this blog worked, my life is going to be OK. A few friends who knew about this little blog told me it was a silly idea and I would be much better off concentrating on my project, etc. It was a lot of hurt but somehow, I managed to sit and blog almost every day for the first three months since most blogs out there do not survive that long. And that was a year and a half ago!

At the beginning, I remember having about 30 page views and a handful of readers a day. Now, the number has grown maybe 20 more times but if you compare to other blogs, it's still a banana. Having a blog brought a lot of perspectives to my life. Now, I have friends and readers who are so intelligent and interested in makeup as much as I do.

The three things I've learned about blogging are:

1. Be persistent in writing: there's a reason for me to blog most days of the week. The more I blog, the better I become in writing. You can't learn writing by not writing. The only way to learn is to write. Blogging is not a time-consuming habit at all! It also teaches me to be organized in my thoughts.

I did not know how well my writing has become until a committee member told me he could understand my thesis crystal clear. And I thought my draft was messy!

2. Be up to date with information: like science, makeup and beauty trends change constantly. The only way to follow them is to read. I did not read as many makeup books in the beginning but the more I blog, the more I find myself reading them. Heck, I even have a segment called Beauty Literotica on my blog for that!

3. Be yourself: I can't pretend I'm someone else, can I? This blog is not about me pretending to be someone. It's about me being myself with a lot more makeup than usual :) Also, during the process of blogging, I learned a lot of things. Nobody taught me how to blog or write codes, I just explored them myself. It's the same spirit that eventually helped me through my master's thesis, as nobody taught me how to use SAS, the statistics software, either!

As a statistics lover, I decided to gather my blog stats and cranked up Excel a little bit.

The year in number. I can't believe I wrote 219 posts this year!

Gotta have a chart
I was very productive in the second half of 2009

At this time, I would like to thank all of you who have been reading, supporting, subscribing, and being my friends throughout the year. Believing this blog to work makes it work. I also would like to thank various publicists and companies who took interests in my blog and offer me review and giveaway materials. I appreciate your relationship with My Makeup Blog. Last but not least, I want to thank the few people who found this blog interesting and started your subscriptions very early on. You know who you are and I can't thank you enough!

Let's look forward to a bigger and better blog in the year 2010!

Best of 2009 from My Makeup Blog

Hi everybody,

As the year has come to closer an end, I would like to take some time and make a list of 10 favorite products I discovered in 2009. Among hundreds of products I've tried this year, picking out the top 10 is not an easy task. It was something I wanted to do last year but unfortunately, I did not have enough time!

Let's all begin, shall we? May I present you...

My Makeup Blog's Top 10 of 2009
The products are listed in no particular order

Brushes:

1. Loew-Cornell Spot Detailer Brush: It's small but it packs a punch! My liners never go askew after I found this brush.

2. EcoTools brush set: hands down the best 11 dollars I've ever spent on makeup brushes. These brushes are so soft and adorable. On top of that, the materials are environmentally friendly, too!

3. StudioTools dual finish brush: it's no longer 2 dollars but it's the best dupe of MAC 187 out there.

4. E.L.F Studio powder brush: the best flat top brush at 3 dollars! I can't wait for E.L.F Studio to be available at Target.

Eyeliners:

5. L'Oreal HiP Color Chrome eyeliners: they are the best you can get at drugstores. I am glad to have 4 of them and really enjoy these very soft and pigmented eyeliners.

There are five more products after the jump!

Eye Shadows:

6. NYC Metro Quartet eye shadows: these soft and mildly pigmented eye shadows are fun to play and portable to tote in your bags. Also, the price is nice and dandy to grab one or all!

 7. Adorned with Grace minerals summer LE: so far, it has been the best LE Adorned with Grace minerals has come up with. I still have all the colors and love them very much!

Blushes:

8. Adorned with Grace minerals shimmer blushes: the best mineral blushes I have ever reviewed! They are so silky, pigmented, and adorable.

Lipsticks:

9. Rimmel London lipstick in Airy Fairy: Who could have thought these Rimmel lipsticks are similar to MAC creamsheen? I think I'm in love with them, after buying Airy Fairy and Pink Champagne. Heck, I might even buy every single color Rimmel has ever made, since I love the texture way too much!

Perfumes:

10. YSL Parisienne: technically, I received this product as a freebie. However, the scent is lovely and feminine enough for me to wear over and over again. Coming from somebody who can't wear a scent 3 days in a row, that's a lot of compliments.

And now, a disclaimer: all products in this list, except for numbers 7,8, and 10 were purchased from my own pocket for my own use and review purposes. AwG products and YSL Parisienne were provided by said companies via PR contacts. Reviews of the products were written in the year 2009 and published in My Makeup Blog. Everyday Minerals New Year Palette

Hi everybody,

We are days away from getting into the year 2010 and I already miss 2009. Some couple of days ago, my friends and I had an epiphany moment when we realized we no longer could write 2009 or '09 or anything with two zeros after number 2 for the year when 2010 starts. (And that's why we've been writing checks like crazy before 2010 begins!)

While the year 2009 has been good to me, mainly at the second half of the year, I am looking forward to 2010. The folks at Everyday Minerals agreed, and they came out with the New Year palette. While the Christmas palette is bright and cheerful, the New Year palette is rich and a little bit sinful in colors.

(L-R): Chamomille, Love Letter, Wine Tasting, and Wild Flowers

The swatch
(L-R): Wild Flowers, Wine Tasting, Love Letters, and Chamomile

Color descriptions from Everyday Minerals:
Chamomile - A light butter yellow with a puff of shimmer.
Love Letters - A matte lilac/purple-pink shade.
Wine Tasting - A deep grape shade with blue flecks of shimmer.
Wild Flowers - Rich taupe matte with mauve undertones.
The back of the palette

Like the Christmas palette, this quad is also pigmented and the texture is a bit more diverse: Chamomile and Wine Tasting have shimmers while Love Letters and Wild Flowers are matte. Chamomile is a very soft yellow color that's suitable for highlighting as well. If I had to choose between the Christmas palette and this one, I would pick the previous ones as I am a fan of colorful eye shadows. However, the New Year palette is more wearable in my opinion.

It is currently available at Everyday Minerals for $7 USD. As they are pigments, they can be used wet or dry. When used wet, make sure not to dip your wet brush directly into the pod and use a good mixing medium. When used dry, a good eyeshadow primer is necessary. I use MAC paint pots as eyeshadow primers.

And now, a disclaimer: this palette was sent to me from a kind representative of Everyday Minerals for reviewing purposes. For more information, please visit Everyday Minerals website. Click here to read My Makeup Blog disclosure policy.

Hope you are having a good day so far. What do you call 2010? Is it "two thousand ten" or "twenty ten"? I'm curious about that.

Dear M.A.C, Part Deux

Hi everybody,

How was your Christmas? Mine was so delightful, jolly, and full that I still feel tingle and happy. Now, sitting in front of the computer and basking over the afterglow of Christmas, I wish to have more time like this. Let me tell you, this is the life, y'all! While checking my email, I noticed a new ad from MAC that prompted me to write another letter to my favorite Canadian makeup company (click here for the original Dear M.A.C.) Rest assure, I am not an anti-fan of Makeup Art Cosmetics in any measures. Some of their products I can't live without, but this is a little bit too much and I guess it's time for some people from MAC to read my blog already.

So what prompted my post-Christmas outrage?

This ad of MAC Studio Fix Lash

Did you see anything strange? Let me show you two!

Numero Uno:

"Really, what is that?" you asked
"That, my dear children," I said, "is not the miracle of Christmas. It's the spine of a pair o' falsies!"
Wanna see numero dos? Jump!

And now, numero dos
It's so wrong in two levels

Let me show you:

Not only you see the spine of the falsies, you also see the model's eyelashes peaking out underneath the pair of falsies!
Can I have an "Oh boy!"?

Those, my friends, are images from MAC's newest campaign called "In the Studio" sent this morning. I don't know if MAC wants to keep it real in their ad campaign for a mascara by not photoshopping the real lashes out of the falsies or not but this is so foul in so many levels:

1. This is an ad for mascara, so why did the model wear fake lashes?

2. If I want to buy this mascara, how do I know how well it performs?

3. Please hire a new photo retoucher and a new art director

I actually have one in mind for you. Yadiq is a reader of mine and a photo retoucher. I know she won't let this happen. Also, any decent makeup artist would try to blend the real lashes with the false lashes using a heated eyelash curler after applying some mascara. Even I, a makeup addict, can tell you that.

So please, MAC, please stop this ridiculous thing from happening again. I don't want to be mean to you but if I see any mascara ads from you with real lashes peaking out of falsies again, I have to report it up here. And I am not kidding! This has got to stop!

Everyday Minerals Christmas Palette: Falala la Lovely!

Hi everyone,

It's Christmas Eve, how cool is that? Seriously, I need to get off the computer and go to the store to get some bread for Christmas linner (that's lunch and dinner together, people!) We are going to have some yummy food and I can't wait to devour them.

Anyways, the reason I am still blogging is this palette from Everyday Minerals:

The Christmas palette, how gorgeous is that?

Each year, EDM comes up with holiday colors during Christmastime. I received some eye shadows last year as gifts with purchase and I thoroughly enjoyed them. When a representative from EDM contacted me regarding products to review, I did not intent to receive any fun colors like this. It was a surprise to open the box and see the Christmas palette.

For those who are EDM fans, the colors from this palette are not very new for you. However, in the past, they were not on sale and you may not get the colors you wanted. Last year, I really wanted the gold eye shadow but got the silver one (Silver Bells) instead. This time around, the Christmas palette makes sure you get everything you want and even some more.

The cover

The back
Close ups and swatch are coming up after the jump!

Each palette has a small mirror and a tiny brush
You dip the brush in each pod to get the pigments and place them on the lid before applying to your eyelids.

Opened pods
From left to right: 12:01 AM, Frost Bitten, Mistletoe, Silver Bells

From Everyday Minerals:
Mistletoe - A medium green with pearlescent light pink highlights.
12:01 AM - Metallic gold with yellow undertones and bursts of shimmer.
Frost Bitten - Like pure white glistening white snow.
Silver Bells - A silver like shade with millions of little silver sparkles.

 A light swatch
(L-R): Silver Bells, Mistletoe, Frost Bitten, and 12:01 AM

Compared to the ones I got last year, the pigmentation of these eye shadows are a whole lot better. I used tiny bits for my swatch and was very surprised to see them on my skin. Also, the container is very sturdy and once the lids are closed, nothing can escape. Priced at 7 dollars, it is affordable and lovely. For those who do not have many bright eye shadows, this palette is a good introduction. I myself love gold eye shadows and 12:01 is perfect!

Ciao for now, my lovelies. I wish you all a peaceful Christmas Eve. Those who are living in the snowing area, please stay warm and dry.

Rimmel London Airy Fairy: A Pink Lipstick for Everyday

Hi everybody,

While I am not a big fan of lipsticks, lately I've caught myself staring at the Rimmel London display every time I go to the drugstore. This brand has some seriously kick-ass lipsticks! After my trial with Pink Champagne, I was very happy with the creaminess of Rimmel lipsticks. Also, the lasting power and price are wonderful, too. While I love Pink Champagne, I realize the color is somewhat too porn star for me ;) It's a good lip color to go out at night and have some fun but for the office and conservative environment, it's a bit too light for me.

Then, along came Airy Fairy, the greatest office friendly lipstick I've ever had!

It's pink, but not too pink
It's nude, but not too nude
It's sexy, but not too overly provocative
What is it?

It's Rimmel London Airy Fairy lipstick, yo!

That's number 070 for you!

Lip swatch
Excuse moi for the chapped lips, it was mighty cold that day!

I really love this lip color, it's so perfect for me. I've been wearing it so many times that the other lipsticks start to get jealous and fight for my attention (just kidding!) If you are still looking for a pink lipstick to go to work, please give Airy Fairy a try.

And now, a disclaimer: this product was purchased from my own pocket for my personal use and review. For more information, please visit Rimmel London website. Please read My Makeup Blog disclosure policy regarding product reviews.

Marilyn Monroe Inspired Makeup FOTDs

Hi everybody,

A couple of nights ago, I went through my picture folder in the old laptop ("Lappie") and realized I have so many FOTD pictures. During my thesis writing months, whenever I got bored or tired from writing, I stood up, went to the bathroom, and played with my makeup. Sometimes, the looks were really good. Other times, they failed miserably. Little did I know how many looks I did and how well they accumulated since September (or October.)

As you may know, I am a fan of Kevyn Aucoin's book "Making Faces" (review here.) In there, he did a Marilyn Monroe inspired look that is glamorous yet very easy to do. As I got closer to my defense, my makeup routine became very simplified and I relied heavily on Sephora Beauty Fever palette for eye and cheek makeup. Little did I know how versatile this little palette is until I did this look and since then, I rely on the palette and this simple method to look pulled together fast.

The legendary Marilyn Monroe

Before I continue, I need to emphasize there's no way on the great green Earth that I resemble the great MM. I'm just an Asian girl who loves makeup, that's all. The essence of Marilyn Monroe makeup is light eye shadows, downcast eyes, and red lips. In "Making Faces", Kevyn Aucoin wrote great instructions on this look and I highly encourage you to read it.

Want to see how I look? Come after the jump!

Look 1

Look at my t-shirt ;)

What I used

Eyes

(L-R) Almay Pure Blends in Lavender and Sephora Beauty Fever palette

Mix #1 and 2 together and apply to the eyelid with an eyeshadow brush, then use MAC 217 brush to apply eyeshadow #3 to the crease. To highlight, mix #1 and 4 together and apply with the same brush to the area underneath the brow bone.

Line your upper lash line and apply mascara.

Semi-close eye

Cheeks and Lips

Apply the darker blush in the Beauty Fever palette to your cheeks, using a blush brush
Layer NYX Gardenia and NYC Retro Red on your lips for a stunning rouge pucker.

Look 2: Same concept but more neutral

This is a more neutral look that's suitable for daytime
I used LORAC Hollywood Heat eyeshadow trio for my eyes, a pink blush on my cheeks, and Rimmel London Airy Fairy lipstick on my lips
"Why so tired?" you may ask
"Because I took this picture around midnight, sweetheart!" I said.

I used Gold Charge Chrome eyeliner from L'Oreal HiP on the lower lash line to perk up this look

Semi-close eye

If you don't have enough time to do your makeup, the Marilyn look is very simple and glamorous. I was walking around my apartment in awe of how simple yet gorgeous my eye makeup looked. It does not take longer than 5 minutes to do your eyes and since the colors are not dark, this look is pretty much goof-proof. When coupled with crimson lips, you get a festive look for the holiday season. However, if you go with a nude color, this is absolutely perfect for the office.

I hope you will find this look helpful. Please let me know what you think, ok?
