Makeup Lesson: How to Line Your Eyes

Good morning, my beauties!

Recently, my friend Carol the Cookie Monster asked for tips to apply eyeliners. People always assume lining your eyes is a simple and easy task but the truth is very far from that assumption. It took me years to master the art of lining my eyes with pencil liners and many years after that to get over the fear of being poked in the eyes by a liquid liner. Just when I thought I was a pro, I found myself stuttering when I lined my friend's eyes. You see, applying eyeliner is not that simple and I guess it is time for me to write a tutorial about this topic.

What you need: pencil liner (Teddy eye kohl from MAC) , a slanted eyeshadow brush (I use MAC 266), a powder eyeshadow (mine is Hazel Brown from Aura Science, a discontinued makeup line at Victoria's Secret), an eyeshadow primer (optional, I use MAC Bare Canvas paint pot), an eyelash curler (mine is ELF, also need to review it!)

Not shown: a mascara (I use L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black)

Optional step: prime your eyes with an eyeshadow primer
Even when I don't use any eyeshadow, I apply Bare Canvas paint pot so my eyes would have some nice glimmers. But most importantly, I have oily eyelids that tend to crease and the eyeshadow primer helps my eye makeup to stay put.

Step 1: Curl your eyelashes

Although curling your eyelashes before or after applying eye makeup is still up for debating, I prefer to curl my lashes first. To my friends who are not into makeup (or are guys), curling eyelashes looks like something from Guantanamo Bay. A friend of mine always refers to the eyelash curler as a torture device. The truth is, it doesn't hurt at all!

Step 2a: Warm up the tip of your pencil eyeliner

While I have other eyeliners, I prefer the Teddy eye kohl for this tutorial because it is soft and glides more effortlessly than the other eyeliners I have. Looking back, my failure line my eyes was mostly due to the pencil I used. Hard ones are more pokey and do not tend to glide that well. Soft ones lack control and if you mess up, it is hard to fix. MAC eye kohl is between hard and soft, which is why I prefer it on days I just need to line my eyes really fast and go.

Warming up the tip of the pencil will make it even softer and hence, make it a lot easier for you to work with.

Step 2b: Make a silly O-face

Remember my fear of being stabbed in the eye by an eyeliner? Well, I blink too much, which increase my chance to have beauty-related injuries. The muscles around the mouth and around the eyes are connected. Therefore, when you make an O, your eyes will not blink. Seriously, I'm not making this up. I learned it in "Human Anatomy and Physiology 1"!

Step 2c: Start lining the eyes

Finally, some action! I prefer to line my eyes from the inside out but you can do whatever way you want: line from the outer corner, from the middle, from the Moon (?!) Well, you get the idea, right? Right?

The secret to getting a straight line is not to line it at once but to connect the dots.

There, I said it. Please write it down, underline it, and highlight it. This is important! It took me years to figure that out because there was no YouTube and Michelle Phan's channel when I started with makeup. Seriously, RiceBunny is a genius!

What you need to do is to move your pencil liner bit by bit connect the dots until you get to the outer corner of your eyes. It should look like this:

Nice, right?
In fact, it's perfect. Now, imagine it is not and I need to fix it. I know it's kind of hard but just use your imagination, ok?

Step 3: Correction

If you did part 2 well, chances are you don't need to correct anything. But for the sake of having a complete tutorial, let's say I messed up big time and I need to fix my goop without having to start all over again, which is a pain in the you-know-what.

So, how can I do it? With a slanted eyeshadow brush and a powder eyeshadow, of course! I use brown because my eyeliner is brown. If you use a different color, make sure your eyeshadow matches, otherwise it would be tres weird :)

With the slanted eyeshadow brush, I dipped it into the eyeshadow pot and apply it over my liner. If there is anything I need to fix or smooth out, my brush will help me do that. Also, if your eyeliner is not waterproof, doing this will enhance the lasting power of your liner a lot longer. (This is a trick I learned from a famous makeup artist whose name just escaped me!)

Optional: line your lower lashes
It's really really optional, most of the time I do not care but recently, I find doing so makes my eyes look more mysterious.

Apply mascara and voila, you're done!

Eyeliners are a lot of fun. I consider it the best part in eye makeup because I hardly wear eye shadows these days. With eyeliner on, you can look put-together fast without using any extra eye makeup on top. Also, I find the eyeliner/paint pot combo gives me a clean and professional look with the least effort.

Carol, I hope this helps you. If anybody has any questions/comments/requests, please let me know! I really appreciate your feedback and they do make my blog better. So please speak up, ok?

The Big Zzzzz

Hi everybody,

So, it's Spring Break for those who are enjoying it. Last week was Spring break for me but instead of chillin' at St. George Island as planned, I was in Spring Break Stat Camp for Cool Kids at Gator Nation, aka University of Florida. And let me tell you this: compressing a one-year statistics course into 4 days is intense! Right now, all I want to do is...

...this!

Mr. Belly was with my neighbor the whole time I was away and he was knocking on my door about 15 minutes after I was back. However, I was too wigged out to play with him. All I want to do is to get enough sleep and make my brain function again.
Being sleep-deprived does strange things to my body: half of the time I was there, I felt hungry even when my stomach was full. The other half of the time, I tried to sleep but could not. The room was near to the highway and I could hear all of the cars, trucks, and vans driving pass. But anyways, I survived the Stat camp!

Also, there were 2 packages waited for me when I came home: one from Tammy and the other one from my Secret Valentine. Thanks, ladies! Right now, I'm just too tired to write anything coherrent and feel excited about the gifts but they are really awesome!

So please give me some time to get back to my regular routine and post something decent. If you have any requests, please email me or send me direct messages at Twitter. I'll do my best to answer your questions but before that, I need to catch some Zzzzzzz....

Belly at Large: Brushies Brushies

Wassup, my home girls? It's Belly time, are you happy?

Yeah, that's yours truly doing the seksay thang called "licking the armpit" :D
I'm more flexible than Madonna, yo!

"Brushie Brushie", what the... Who wrote that? Ah meow, that was me. You see, having no opposable thumbs makes it hard to type. I meant to type something smart and clever but ended up with that, which is tackier than the bad cat food* the human handler Dao forces me to eat.

While Dao is busy crunching numbers and jumping** with her laptop, I get to use her other laptop as well as raid her stash. HaHA, take that for givin' me chicken flavor cat food. I am a salmon and tuna feline, yo!

Guess what, Dao? I got access to your brush stash, meow meow meow meow meow *big grin* And I also found out you got a request from Tweeter on brush comparison. I either gnaw your dearly beloved brushes into pieces or do a review for you. I could have gone feline crazy but instead, I chose to ride the high horse. Imagine me, a cat, riding a high horse. Ha!

The request from Tweetie was to compare brushes from EcoTools, StudioTools, and E.L.F Studio.

Recap:

Wanna know my opinion about these brands? JMP!

Dao always said the EcoTools and E.L.F Studio powder brushes are softer than moi. Pfff, puh-lease, sister! Nobody/nothing is softer than yours truly. Maybe they are softer than her senior citizen teddy bear, Whatshisface, but they can't be softer than me.

*Bring the powder brush to nose, twirl twirl twirl, brush brush brush*

Ah-choo! She's right, this thing is soft! No wonder she loves it so much. I like the EcoTools brushes because they are made of bamboo and recycled materials. Plus the blush brush is thick enough to cause damage to them racoons that eat my food. The E.L.F powder brush is not so bad, though. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it's an expensive brush. But then, she has to pay shipping, which costs around 2 bags of cat food. No wonder why I have to eat this horrible chicken flavor thing she bought on sale!

The StudioTools dual fiber brush is solid gold, if you can get it. The local Target does not carry it, despit jacking the price from 2 dollars (2 bags of treats) to 7 bucks (2 bags of Friskies.) That brush makes stripped people like moi look good, despite being called the skunk brush. Skunky schmunky, I'd gnaw it any day!

The vintage StudioTools brushes are aiight, I don't know if the new ones are as soft. Or if you can find the same ones. That slanted blush brush makes raccon fur feel like chinchilla or something. It is scratchy, yo! I would not use it to brush my paws, even.

In conclusion, I rank the brushes as follow: EcoTools, E.L.F Studio, StudioTools based on softness. Based on the price, they would be the same price per item if taken shipping and handling out of the question. For starters, I highly suggest EcoTools and E.L.F Studio. Their stuff isn't so expensive but are reliable. StudioTools brushes are hits and misses, although they are really cheap and easy to find at Target.

**Jumping? Did I actually type "jumping"? N00b me! It's JMP, the number crunching software thingy.
*I abhor chicken, yet she brought bags of chicken flavored cat food home. Racoons ate it and I fought racoons. They can eat chicken flavored cat food but I won!

So, whoever on Tweety-bird requested this comaparisony thingy, I hope you're happy. Send more requests, people. Anything I can pounce on, chew at, or rub around, I will review. You like, you give me tuna and salmon cat food, deal? I need to work to get my own cat food. It's tough out there for a cat, yo!

Love, peace, and tuna fish,
Mr. Belly

Hotel Room and Tiredness

Salut!

How are you doing? I know it's late but I'd better blog when I still can. The next ten minutes or so, I may dose off. Did you watch the Academy Awards yesterday? I did, and then I had to go to this week-long boot camp early in the morning. So, for this week the agenda is crunching numbers and more numbers. And it's all for a good reason: I am getting closer to publish my first paper after all. Dao et. al is going to available in a prestigious scientific journal near you some time this year. Seriously, it's about time already!

Anyways, I don't know if I can blog anything with essence this week. And I hope you understand. But I'll do my best to keep this blog afloat :)

Mr. Belly: Gimme that camera!
The tiger inside of him came out, see :)
That's all for now. I need to get me some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be another number crunching day for me!

Lashed Out FOTD

Hi everybody,

"Uh oh, 'Lashed Out'? Why is she so angry today?" you may ask.

Truth be told, I am not angry, I am not in denial, I am nowhere near being negative today. Nobody ticked me off yet (and let's hope so!) What I am talking is about false eyelashes. Like this:

I looked like a 15 year-old here :)

The pair of lashes I used are more natural than the ones I did in the lash application tutorial and the "Baby Doll" FOTD. In fact, it was the first pair I bought that I didn't ruin. It just gives me enough oomp without looking like a drag queen. The whole thing was fast and pretty simple. Here are what you'll need:

A pair of false lashes (mine is Ardell's 110), gel black eyeliner (Blacktrack), slanted eyeliner brush (mine came from Coastal Scents) Bare Canvas paint pot as a primer, black mascara, eyelash curler*, and undereye concealer (mine is Maybelline)

Not pictured: white eyeliner (I used Wet n Wild Idol Eyes pencil in Pixie), lash glue, and Rimmel London Celeb lipstick.

Wanna recreate this look? Jump!

Eyes: basically, it's the same thing as I did in the eyelash application tutorial but I lined the upper lashes thicker to give my eyes a more mod-doll look. Also, I lined my lower lashes with Pixie to give my eyes are brighter and more wide awake look. Then, I applied the falsies and covered my dark circles with the concealer (it doesn't work that well, by the way.)

Closed eyes, you can see the spine a bit

Blended lashes and look how natural the Ardell's 110 is!

Since the Ardell's 110 falsies are shorter, they are a lot lighter and easier to apply. Also, they make you look so much like you wear fake lashes. I love this pair of lashes for regular occasions because they are so comfortable to wear.

Face
I applied my mineral foundation with the big fluffy ELF Studio powder brush (love!) and EDM Snuggle blush with the Sonia Kashuk flat top blusher brush. My face was redder than usual thanks to the weather, it makes my skin so sensitive lately.

Lips:
I applied Rimmel London lipstick in Celeb and top it with a lipgloss. Lookin' good, right?

Close up at the face
Hand/fingers on the face = an effort to conceal a blemish

Just for giggles
Seriously, I do look like a 15 year old here!

And you know what I did next? I went to Border's and this gorgeous guy who wore some seriously erotic perfume sat next to me. I don't know what he wore but it totally tickled my fancy. I almost asked him but stopped because I didn't want to be rude. The guy was very into his reading. (By the way, is it ok to ask a random hot stranger of the opposite sex what perfume does he wear?)

The one thing I love about this FOTD is I don't use any eyeshadow except Bare Canvas paint pot and the eyeliners. Yet, it is a very put-together look. And my eyes looked HUGE! I wonder if that sweet smelling dude sat next to me because of my eyes ;)

* about the eyelash curler: mon ami Alienman gave it to me as a cadeax. As much as I love it, I haven't got around to write a proper review. Everytime I do a FOTD and that eyelash curler is there, I always said, "I swear to God I need to review this eyelash curler!" It's really good.

Ok, that's all for now. I hope you like this FOTD. Have you wear false lashes lately?

All Banged Up: YouTube Videos

Hi everyone,

In yesterday's post, a reader suggested me to post some of my favorite YouTube videos about cutting your own side-sweep bangs. While there are many, I chose two of my most favorites in this topic and another one about styling your bangs. I hope you'll enjoy!

1. Kandee Johnson: actually, I watched this video and it got me started. Kandee's video is well instructed and she uses a razor instead of serrated shears like I do.

2. ahanhbarbie34: Hanh used a razor comb in this tutorial, which is a bit easier to use but she cut her hair wet (I don't prefer to do that, as I may end up with much shorter bangs!) Her styling tips are excellent, especially for those with fine hair.

3. Kandee Johnson (again): how to style your bangs in 2 minutes. I love her videos very much and this one shows a different way to style your bangs. You may end up looking like Nicole Richie :)

I hope you'll enjoy the videos and find it comfortable enough to cut your own bangs. It is not that challenging but you do need to take your time to trim it. Also, start cutting shorter pieces of hair first so you don't end up with bangs so short they stand straight up. (That was what happened to me in 7th grade, by the way!) If you are like me, chances are you need your bangs trimmed once a month. If you do it by yourself, you really save a lot of money and still look dashing.

How to Trim Your Own Side-Sweep Bangs

Hello everybody,

I got into a serious case of not knowing what to blog about. Seriously, I have lots of pictures of products and looks that are ready to be written, yet I don't know where to start. One good thing did happen: about 2 weeks ago, I mentioned about a bang trimming tutorial. And now, with all these confusions and writer's block in my mind, a scheduled post is the solution for me.

Nicole Richie and her famous side-sweep bangs

After consulting various magazines and YouTube videos regarding bang trimming, I concluded that DIY bang trims are not so difficult. However, cutting your own hair can potentially give you outrageously ridiculous result, I advise you to proceed with cautions. I still can't forget the catastrophic fringe trim job I did on myself in 7th grade.

Breath in, breath out. Inhale, exhale. Are you ready? Let's go!

Tools for the trade: several pieces of old newspaper to line your hair cutting place, a pair of serrated scissors, a pair of scissors, a comb, and a rat-tail comb
Wanna know how? Jump!

My before shot with overgrown bangs
I looked like a pirate here, arghhhhh!

Use the rat tail comb to section your fringe and bring all the hair you want for your fringe to the front
Secure the rest of your hair to the back with either some hair clips or a ponytailer.

Important: Hair should be dry (don't cut your bangs with wet hair! You will get much shorter bangs when it's dried!)

You should look like the girl in "The Ring" at this point and you can choose to (a) scare your kids/parents/cats/dogs/neighbors and forget about bang trimming or (b) stop giggling and start cutting already!

Pick up that pair of scissors and start trimming, sister!

Believe it or not, the secret of getting side-sweep bangs is knowing how to cut a straight line. I use my nose as the reference point and start snipping from there to the side. Also, I find nose-length hair to give me the best bang for the buck (pun intended!)

A technique used in this step is "point cut" or "pointy cut", where the tip of your scissors is pointing upward and you use it to cut only. It is totally different than your everyday scissoring where you use the whole length of your blades to cut.

Point cut hair, once blown dry, will curve inward. This technique when used in bang trimming does give your bangs better shape than the blunt cut. (See, I've been to Aveda Institute so many times that I know the technical terms!)

Should look like this
For reference: I trimmed about 1/2 inch of hair off my bangs

Remember those serrated scissors? It's time to use them!

Move the hair to the side of your face that you want your bangs to lay, then use the serrated scissors to soften your bang by cutting about 2 inches from the end. Don't worry, the serrated scissors will not shorten your bangs. It will give your hair more layers and movement.

What I usually do at this point is to cut each 2-inch section and move to the next, starting from the outside to the inside of my bangs. After I am done with the whole bang, I use my hand to fluff my hair to see how it moves. If it is too thick, I use the serrated scissors again to thin it down.

Note: I bought my serrated scissors a long time ago when I was back home. I believe Sally's Beauty Supplies have both the serrated and regular scissors. If you can't find it, a hair razor would do, although I don't prefer it.

After going 2-3 rounds with the serrated scissors, my bangs looked like that
Still look like a pirate but with shorter bangs.

Now, it's time to style my bangs

Look, I'm Squidward!
I roll my bang backward with a velcro roller and secure it with a hairclip. For some unknown reasons, rolling my hair backward gives me much fluffier bangs without using any hair styling products at al! Usually, I keep the roller on for 10 minutes but if my hair was just freshly cut, I would leave it a bit longer. New bangs need some serious bang training!

While waiting for the hair to roll, it's clean up time!

Fold the newspapers and trash it.

Take the roller off et voila, new fringe!

For those who fancy trimming your own bangs, I hope this post will help you. I need to re-emphasize the catastrophic effect of having bad bangs so please proceed with caution. It is better to take time when trimming your own bangs than living with something funny on your face for some couple of weeks (or months!) The first time I trimmed my bangs, it took me a good half hour. Later, as I know the routine, it only takes me 15 minutes. It is up to you to decide the thickness of your bangs. Mine is pretty thick because it goes well with my face. You can start with thin, wispy bangs like Nicole Richie's and gradually add more thickness to it if you want.

If you have any tips or tricks on how to acquire the coveted side-sweep bangs, please let me know in the comment section, alright?
