Channeling My Inner Diva (or How I Forgot Halloween!)

Hi everyone,

The other day, I drove around and noticed some costume sales. It took me a couple of red lights to realize Halloween is at the end of this month and I have done diddly squat to prepare for it. To think about it, I have been busier than ever. The only time I was this busy was when I wrote that thesis to push myself out of grad school. But even with that, I did remember about Halloween.

But I'm not complaining. More things for me to do mean more money coming in at the end of the year. It also means people trust me enough to give me things to do. Just to remember not so long ago I was bouncing from one interview to another without landing anything gives me a shudder.

In my head, I was planning to do a Halloween look with some rhinestones gluing onto my face. But as I said, my timing was wrong and I ended up being supremely divalicous to myself. And please don't ask me how I did my makeup. I had no clue! This is a mix of Mariah Carey's hair in Honey, Katy Perry with her bright lips, and some K-Pop star eye makeup. I only had sunscreen and some powder on my face that day, btw :)

I did some mild facial and nose contouring. For the eyes, there was a mix of browns and purple blended out really well before I applied false eyelashes. I highlighted the inner corner of my eyes and the lower lash line with a champagne eye shadow. This is a highlighting trick Korean pop stars use on their eyes. It totally works as my eyes look huge!

If I used a primer and liquid foundation that day, it would probably ended up looking more K-Pop than this. But I do consider this a trial run in case I decide to do a real Korean pop star makeup look one day :)

Huge eyes at every angle, wow!
Close-up on the eye
This is probably the most unhelpful close-up picture ever.
Everything is so nice and muted that you can hardly see anything!
What I did on the eyes:

  • Applied a light brown cream eye shadow as a base on the eyelids, MAC Bare Canvas (light pink champagne-ish color) underneath the brows to highlight
  • Smudged out a soft liner near the lash line to darken it
  • All the eye shadows I used have some sort of shimmers in them. I applied an inky purple eye shadow from the outer corner into 2/3 or the eye, then applied dark brown on the crease, blended out with a light brown color until they all look nice and natural and shimmery
  • Highlighted underneath the brow bone with a shimmery champagne color, then applied the same color to the inner corner of the eyes and to the lower lash line. Don't be afraid if you can see a really pale line on your lower lashes. It's supposed to look like so!
  • Mascara-ed up, line your eyes, and applied falsies.
Lips: bright pink lipsticks à la Katy Perry :)

Hair: curled up and tied to the side.

Then, you can totally sass people and demand things to be done your way. Yup, the divalicious act is good for a Halloween night!

Happy Halloween, y'all!

WELUVMEOW

Herro girls!
I received a parcel of goodness a week ago and it's from....

Weluvmeow was started in 2009 with the basic aim of making street style fashion, comfortable and appealing clothes available to all. Although there are many spree sites selling similar items and maybe at even cheaper prices, they ensure that the items they sell are of good quality. Now, you can solve all your woes here from head to toe – from accessories to dresses, to shoes for casual or a night out.. even your dearest macbook no longer has to stay naked! ^^

I've been looking for a nice leather jacket for the LONGEST time ever, and now I finally found the perfect one...

Note the quilted shoulders!! I think it's gorgeous. It's the small details that always make something look nice.

And I really love the length, not too long not too short. Definitely gonna match the jacket with a maxi dress next time, think it's gonna look kickass. The quality of the jacket is super good also. I was really damn impressed when I touched it. QUALITY ASSURED!!! Even Daniel said it's nice!!

They have it in wine red too, and I think I'm gonna buy it from them! It's mad pretty and the colour is just perfect!

I was previously searching for a pair of simple black kitten heel cos all my heels are too high for me to wear it daily. It's more of weekend heels? So I decided on this pair of suede heels which is so versatile. It really matches with a lot of my outfits, and it's comfortable too!

QUOTE "WLMXSOPHIA" FOR SPECIAL PRICE ON THIS PAIR OF BLACK SUEDE HEELS.
$29.90 - Meetup
$31.90 - Normal mail
$34.40 - Registered mail

Couldn't resist myself while browsing through weluvmeow and bought myself another pair of shoes inspite of the above sponsored heels.

Here's another thing I like about WLM. The web store is very clean cut and straightforward which makes the shopping experience quick and hassle-free. They even provide real life pictures for better referencing!

How does cherryvell look in the jacket?

Honestly loving my items from WELUVMEOW !! Hopefully I'm going to HK in December then I can bring the shoes and jacket together with me (: I've already bookmarked their online store on my browser, you better do too!!

They also do meet up/self collection, and you even get $1 off if you opt for that! (:

Visited Sofries 2 nights ago for dinner! And here's me munching on sweet potato fries.

You need to head down to Sofries if you're a fan of fries cos they have different types of fries with a huge variety of dips. My favorite type of fries is probably sweet potato or cereal fries, and favorite dip would be cheese and garlic!

Sofries was kind enough to let me try a huge platter and 6 different types of sauces.
Do visit Sofries if you're a fan of fries and sauces (:

Met Jia for awhile for a drink. Toffee Nut Latte is back at starbucks and I obviously got it!! Too nice to miss it. So we were talking about Christianity, world ending, hurricane sandy etc. Was really nice catching up with her even though it was just for a short while. Obligatory toilet shot hehe.

Met Kaykay and we went to TCC for dinner. She was sharing with me her stories about Hibiki(her new pup). Super love dogs. Once you get a dog, you will understand how it feels like. They just exude certain innocence which makes you love them like a little kid.

Look out for this space cos I'll be sharing awesome stuff from a blogshop soon!

Concealer Tricks to Banish Raccoon Eyes

Hi everyone,

When I was in my 20s, I could stay up really late to study and still looked fresh in the morning. But only a few years into the 30s wonderland and here I am needing concealer like a calf needs milk! When I got a chance to interview James Molloy from MAC, one of his tips is to really conceal the dark circles under and around the eyes. He prefers to bring lights to a woman's face and I took his advice. A little bit of well-blended concealer can make you look wide awake and take years off your age. Trust me, I know!

Lately, I have found an effective way to conceal my raccoon eyes. It's not cakey and the products I use are not outrageously expensive (YSL Touche Eclat, I'm looking atcha!) If you have the same problem, I hope this post is helpful to you.

What I use:

  • Maybelline Super Stay Concealer 24HR in light: this is a drugstore product that works really, really well without setting into lines. Unlike many concealers out there, this has a peach tone which works great to conceal darkness on cool tone skins
  • MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer in NW 20: I know MAC has a ton of concealers with different textures but this one is the easiest to use. The texture is mousse-like and I can blend it with my fingers. Definitely a nice product to use when I'm in a hurry
  • MAC Mineralize Concealer in NC 20: I got this as a gift and since it's a cool-tone product, it doesn't work that well to conceal dark circles (you need to use a concealer with an opposite tone to your skin to conceal darkness on your face.) However, it has tiny pearlized particles that reflect light so I use it for a different purpose: to highlight.
Let's get to work, shall we?

First of all, here is how I look without any under eye concealers. I have a few fine lines and bumps around that area. The bumps make it tricky to conceal as too much product can make that area look cakey.

I decided to get a lil' bit creative and used the Maybelline concealer on my right eye (your left, the one with the dots undearneath) and MAC Studio Sculpt on my left (your right)

I blended the concealer on my right eye with my finger and used a small dual fiber brush like MAC 188 to blend out the concealer on the other eye. Yup, that was moi looking quite mad while blending out concealer (which, btw, I think is the key to success here: you need to look mad so the dark circles would stay quiet and take the concealers like they should!)

After I blended things out, things started to look like this.

But wait, there's more! This is when the Mineralize Concealer comes handy: I've found out that in order to completely take away the darkness and brighten up the whole face, I need to add some sort of luminizer to this area. The Mineralize Concealer has this wicked wand that can reach to small places like none of your bidnez. I feathered it out like this, waited for a couple of minutes for the concealer to thicken a bit before I blended things out with the small dual fiber brush.

And here is the end result:

You have seen this picture before in the Benefit post. I used the concealers here and foundation/primer from Benefit. The products I use in this post are excellent. The trick to make them work is to use a small amount of product and let it get a bit tacky before you blend out. Please don't pile on your makeup but work them into your skin. MAC has reliable concealers and if you are loaded, try Cle de Peau. That thing costs around 70 bucks but from what I've heard, it's the best in the biz.

Also, I wrote a post about how to create beautiful skin with makeup. This is essentially what I do these days to get that porcelain skin that celebrities have. Believe me on this one: when it comes to skin, less makeup is more. And if you haven't had a dual-fiber brush in your kit, please get one. It's a gift that keeps on giving. I've never been happier since I started using this brush again.

If you give this a try, please let me know what you think. I'd love to hear from you!

With love,
Dao xoxo

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

This year is actually the first time I celebrated Halloween throughout my entire life. Yeah, I don't know why I'm so boring. BUT I'M GONNA START CELEBRATING EVERY YEAR ALREADY COS IT'S SOOOOO FUN!!!

It was a super impromptu decision to party. Got my costume on the day itself at Masquerade, headed home to rest for a bit then cabbed down to Mich's place so she could help me with the hair. Yeah. I don't know how to tong my own hair, fml. I really need to learn.

SPANKS MICHY!! <3

We finally got ready at like 10ish and the boys were already waiting for us there. So... are you ready to meet the rest of my halloween crew? (:

Zee, some kinda pilot or plane staff!

My soldier boy who looks like dictator aladeen -.-

Mich the forest fairy, and Jp the safari man but he looks like a Jap soldier to me.

Sometimes I really wonder if all your ugly faces is a talent or a downfall. Why oh why.

Alex who randomly borrowed horns from Merry staff. Nathan who looks like Woody from Toy story to me!

Tim, obviously the superman.

Serene the pussy. HAHAH ok serene the kitty cat <3

Seeeeeee this is what I mean.

Not very sure what Kalyn is, but she looks like the magician's helper to me. Sophie calls herself the skanky gypsy, and yutaki the sailorman. Don't know him personally though, but obviously I know who he is.

Sofie is a blood tearing doll I think. So poor thing, she got an eye infection!!

I think this is extremely scary!!! IT LOOKS TOO REAL OMG

DORAEMON!!
Pity this guy, must be perspiring like mad underneath. Anyways, why is Singapore so friggin hot now?!!

HERRO KITTY!

Grabbed some photos off Qing yu's fb!

Group picture!! How fun the picture looks when everyone's dressed up differently! I love theme parties :D

Band of brothers.

Bang bang, I shot you down.

So as you can see, my halloween night at Zouk was really a ball of fun! Wanted to go as a pirate but it was too last minute so I settled for wonderwoman which is still quite cute!!

Daniel and I also went for Spooktacular for our 3rd year anniversary. Actually we wanted to book USS horror night but I booked wrongly so we ended up at BORING AS HELL spooktacular.

Every single haunted house has a queue of 1 hour!!! YOU MAD BRO?!! So boring still want people to queue for an hour. We left within 1.5 hour cos we went into one haunted house, and there was absolutely nothing interesting or scary about it. Walked out and we were like, wtf seriously that's all???

That was us before reaching fort siloso, looking excited cos we expected something better!

I was really super super disappointed to such a point I didn't even want to talk during the bus ride out Sentosa, but Daniel is always always a sweetheart trying to make me happier. We ended up having heart to heart talk during the long bus ride and supper, walked from Jurong east to my place. So much happier doing simple happy things with him.

Saw this while walking back home, so cute!! I literally squealed when I saw it. How can such a cute thing be near my house and I don't even know?!! I feel like walking pass it everyday now hahaha.

It's monday morning and I can't wait for Daniel to book out already. We kinda quarrelled last night, ok more like I was unhappy with him for something. And I was damn pissed of with him until today, like super. But he just has his magic on me. We just need to talk things out, and he being himself can cheer me up a lot already.  Can't wait for him to book out! It's his birthday this coming weekend :D

Gonna sleep now, goodnight xiao mei mei men.
